One of the aspects of putting your clothes together is to understand your body's proportion- that is, the length of your body versus that of your legs.
Sketch of proportion:
 |
1. Collar
2. Chest
3. Waist
Your natural waistline is roughly in line with your belly button.
4. Inside Leg
From the top of the inside leg at the crutch to the hem.
5. Sleeve
This is taken from the neck point (the collar seam on the shoulder line) along the shoulder and down the outer sleeve to the cut edge.
6. Outside Leg
From natural waistline to the hem.
7. Centre Back Length
This measurement is taken from the centre of the neck at the collar seam to the hem. |
Few men are completely in proportion. If you buy e.g. a 107cm(42in) suit, the leg length is assumed to be 79cm(31in). However, most men do not fit neatly into these predetermined measurements. Some men's bodies are proportionally longer and hence their inside leg measurement shorter, an vice versa. This why so many brands of suit trousers are available with unfinished hems or a choice or leg lengths Similarly, you will find that Jeans come in up to 6 different leg lengths for each waist measurement.
Once you have discovered which category your body falls into, you will be able to follow a few simple guidelines to help you combine clothes and select colours and cuts that appear to adjust imbalances The aim of the right styling is creating the illusion of having a balanced body.
The possible combinations are:
- Short body and long legs
- Long body and short legs
- Balanced proportions
Find out with Joy of Colour what your body proportions are, so that we can help you to combine clothes that appear to adjust any imbalances and give the illusion of perfect proportion.
