Colour your home

Living in a world of colour means that sometimes, frequently we are drawn to play safe (and) all we want to do at home is paint it white.

However, colour plays an integral part in our lives and colour has the power to transform a room in to a personal, relaxed living space. Using colour in the home does not mean drenching every wall in the same. Colour trends change with time, and the long trend for oatmeal, while still popular, is being replaced with a feel for stronger, less neutral tones.

Here are some suggestions for colour trends for 2007...

Debi Harris, of Porous Designs, says:

"We think about the light, space and dimensions when working on any project and work with the client to create harmony and proportion. The images above show how taking certain powerful shades you can create an impact. The Azure blue behind the kitchen shelves creates an ocean of colour, while the cerise edge of the specially commissioned rug in the lounge creates a refreshing zing in an otherwise neutral room. The pink is picked up in the cushions on the sofa and the whole effect is one of harmony. The ruby tiles in the small kitchen work because even in a fairly tight space, a rich, deep colour can enhance the feeling of luxury and attention to detail."

The meaning of Colour in the Home.

Michaela Jedinak, of Joy of Colour, Is a colour expert, and she knows exactly how colour can affect mood and emotion. Her top tips for colour in the home are:

"Colour can define your mood and personality - often, people are afraid to use colour in their home and will stick to neutral shades out of fear of what others will think. They need the courage to be different and using an interior designer can help them to be more adventurous in their choices. Colour can lift our spirits or sink them, depress our appetite or decrease it, make our hearts beat faster or soothe it. Choosing the right shade to live or work with is exciting and important !"

Here are some of Michaela's definitions of colour in the home. More can be seen on her fascinating website, www.joyofcolour.com and she is available for personal and on-line consultation.

ORANGE
A stimulating colour, orange inspires activity, so use a dash in the office or in a children's playroom. North facing rooms and dark stairwells become lively with a touch of orange and it also suits ethnic, African style living rooms.

RED
The colour of passion - use in the bedroom to stimulate desire or in the dining room to rouse the appetite!

GOLD
A sumptuous and regal hue, use its warmth in dark rooms or add movie style glamour to your bedroom or bathroom

YELLOW
The sun colour brings light and life - It stimulates the pineal gland that regulates our body clock and heralds the arrival of spring. Use in the home as a pick me up in sunny bathrooms or kitchens or to create space in small rooms

GREEN
A healing, nurturing shade, symbolising life. In home offices, it encourages good decision making. In bathrooms or bedrooms it restores the mind and body in jade or mint shades

BLUE
The colour of communication, logic and reflection. Use lighter tones to create calm by stilling the mind, in bedrooms, and in stronger shades in studies.

Using colour in the home can really create a difference - so let go of neutrals and let that inner rainbow in!
